homemade strawberry margaritas

by Stacy

My husband looked at me the other night and asked, “Do we need anything else from the grocery store?”

Being unaware of needing anything at all from the grocery store, I was somewhat confused. “Umm…. no? What do we need from the grocery store?”

“Oh, I was just going to run over and get some limeade.”
“Limeade?”
“For margaritas.”
“Oh. Are we having margaritas?”
“Not until I get some limeade.”
“Hmm….”

So in a slight variation of “when life gives you lemons,” remember these guys?

strawberry field forever

Right. Nine pounds. Before we went out of town I froze about three or four pounds of them for later. It’s later.

Instead of syrupy drink mixes or high-fructose corn syrup-based limeade, a handful of organic strawberries, a few ice cubes, some booze, and a blender made us a nice batch of cheery strawberry margaritas. Using the frozen berries was easy and required less ice. Bagged berries from the freezer section would work, too, just check for added sugars as you may need to adjust the recipe.

Instead of being overly sweet these had a nice brightness of flavor to them, no additives, and using the whole fruit makes them sort of good for you, right?

Frozen Strawberry Margaritas

Makes 2 drinks

Depending on your berries, your booze, and your taste, you’ll want to use these measurements as general guidelines and adjust as needed. Our berries were fairly sweet so not much sugar was needed. If you use a bag of frozen berries from the store, check that no sugar was added.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups frozen strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 ounces tequila
  • 1 ounce triple sec or Grand Marnier
  • 4 ice cubes
  • juice of half a lime

Directions:

  1. Make a simple syrup: In a small saucepan mix sugar with 1/4 cup water. Heat, stirring constantly, until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Add frozen strawberries, liquors, and about a tablespoon of cooled simple syrup to a blender. Blend until decently combined. Add lime juice to taste and more simple syrup if needed. Add ice cubes 1-2 at a time and puree until smooth.
