begging the question

by Stacy

So after thinking about why you DO cook, what about those who don’t?

Why DON’T you cook?

There are times we eat out, absolutely, and my husband would be perfectly happy if I told him I wasn’t going to buy groceries and he had to subsist on Chipotle and In-and-Out burgers, but usually, I cook.

Apparently that isn’t normal. Are Americans being told we’re too stupid to cook and believing it?

It’s a long video, but worth the time, to watch British chef Jamie Oliver talk passionately about the importance of cooking.

We don’t have kids, but we plan to. Whether or not we will raise them vegetarian has yet to be decided. But I will still cook. And they will know the difference between a potato and a tomato. And probably a piano and a harpsichord, but my family is a bit odd.

Everyday dishes coming up next, I promise! It’s my husband’s “weekend,” and he stole the desktop computer with my photos on it.

Well, maybe we’re not “mainstream” but I can’t cook without two little “helpers” getting into the middle of it. The 6-year-old knows perfectly well how to scramble eggs and the 3-year-old was delighted with her Pampered Chef kids knife for Christmas. Mine will know how to cook!

But it *should* be mainstream! I could make scrambled eggs as soon as I was tall enough to reach the stove — and as you know, in my family, that didn’t take long.

I don’t cook sometimes because I slack on cleaning up after I cook. Then the next day I have to clean, and after I get done scrubbing my kitchen I don’t want to dirty it up again. It’s a vicious cycle. >_<

I saw a preview for his TV show last night and it looks great! It’s wonderful to see a celebrity chef so passionate about this cause, I’ve always wondered why so few of them seem to talk about this issue? I have long waited for the days when I could cook with my son. He’s starting…he stirs things on the stove (with our supervision, of course) and helps me mix batters or marinades. And he loves it. I can’t wait until he is older and can be involved more with our cooking and grocery shopping.

I don’t cook because it bores me to tears. Literally.

Yeah. Me too. OK, not quite to tears. Especially if it’s cookies. But I find amusement in cooking every 3-4 weeks. Like once in that time period.

The kid helps as much as she’s able and we’re patient for. It’s gonna be a while before she’s ready to scramble eggs, though. Even on a stool.
