csa share 04/21/11

by Stacy

After an overcast morning spent at the computer, I was happy the sun came out right about the time I needed to head to the farmer’s market to pick up our CSA share. It counts as my workout for the day since I walked and carried all the veggies home myself, right?

The market was hopping! I grabbed a few apples and a bag of fresh dates since I was there. The apple seller said cherries will be in next week. While I transferred my share of produce into my bags, a woman asked why there were no green peppers at the stand. The patience of the seller impressed me as she explained that peppers are not currently in season.

Greens are still in season, though.

The root veggies have greens, too!

The beets are already roasted and cooling on my counter as I type this.

The broccoli has organized, marched, and taken over the fridge.

This mint permeated my entire kitchen.

We don’t always manage to use up all the sprouts we get, but the onion sprouts are my favorite. They add punch to salads, zest to sandwiches, and crunch to pretty much everything else.

My cat is currently attempting to destroy everything in my office and I still need to finish up a project tonight. So — reader’s choice!

What from this share don’t you know how to use?

Do you eat it all before it goes bad? That would be a concern of mine with the CSA thing.

Not every week. We compost, which I feel better about than tossing stuff. But when we got more produce at the grocery store, we didn’t always get through all of that before it went bad, either. I try to prioritize the most perishable items to eat first, squash and root veggies last a while. Storing things properly really helps.

We grow a small patio garden, but our CSA tells us what they’re planting so we know what to expect. For example, we get herbs in the box, but I still grow cilantro and basil so it’s always handy.
