csa share 06/09/11

Last Thursday, instead of walking to the farmers’ market, I was heading out to dinner with my mother and my godparents in the suburbs of Minneapolis. Saturday we had a memorial party for my dad with lots of food, family, and badminton. It was hot and humid and all that summer in Minnesota should be.

Yesterday I flew back to San Diego, “June Gloom,” and a desolate fridge. Luckily we just shifted our CSA pickup by a week.

Today’s market was bustling with more produce and people than in previous weeks (I ran into Stephanie again and we enjoyed Salvadoran pupusas together). The orchard stand threw 2 free pluots in my bag when I confessed that the peaches I bought 2 weeks ago didn’t last until my husband got home from work.

Here’s what we got from Suzie’s Farm today:

Produce like this doesn’t inspire me to look up recipes, it beseeches me to resist messing with a good thing and treat it minimally.

Potatoes, boiled and tossed with arugula, onions, and a tangy vinaigrette.

Onion sprouts stuffed into sandwiches, wraps, tacos, and burgers, sprinkled on salads, and stirred in with eggs.

Basil, spinach, onions, and summer squash tossed with pasta or rice or quinoa.

Sauteed spinach with eggs. Creamed spinach on toast. Wilted spinach sprinkled with sesame oil and sesame seeds.

Butter lettuce folded into spring rolls, or layered on a sandwich or burger.

A heaping bowl of salad with a simple dressing.

Strawberries rinsed and relished, one at a time, from a pretty bowl, turning your fingertips pink.

You caught me — I am thinking of stuffing those eight-ball squash. But not for a few days.

What’s in season where you live?

Respect the power of the hyphen, oh punny one. Be nice or we’ll get your kid a drum kit.

A chef in Berkeley, where I live, told me this week: The thing about produce in California is you need to take your ego out of it, get out of the way, and let it speak for itself. You don’t really need to coax the flavors out of the fruits and vegetables we have access to on a year-round basis. Agreed!

Agreed. I’ve honestly been eating salads lately because it seems a shame to mess with some of the stuff.
