csa share 08/18/11

These photos are from Thursday, but I’ve been running around like crazy! After I picked up our CSA share, I zoomed home, took photos, then hopped on Twitter for #healthylife chat.

Then it was off to Sea Rocket Bistro for a special prix fixe menu in honor of the charming Hank Shaw who was in town signing his new book, Hunt Gather Cook.

I was a tiny bit sad to go out to dinner that night, however, because we got such great produce in our CSA box this week.

Beans are a serious staple in our house and I love getting fresh shelling beans. They don’t take that long to pop out of their pods. The only bummer is that the beautiful pink pattern fades when they’re cooked.

Those crazy cukes are actually West Indian gherkins, a “different cultivar” than a cucumber I was assured by Wikipedia after editing my photos. They may be destined for the pickle jar as well.

And fruit! So exciting. The Veggie-Hating Husband also dislikes watermelon. Agua fresca? Watermelon steaks? Watermelon-cucumber-mint salad? So many possibilities.

Are you tired of summer produce yet? I am not. More tomatoes and eggplant for me, please!

Ouch – those cucumbers (gherkins) look prickly!

As for the watermelon, I enjoy eating it straight up so much, I hardly get around to mixing it up with other flavors. But feta and/or a drizzle of balsamic is a good one.

Lucky you to get such great things in your basket. Now that our garden is ‘over’ I will miss the fresh goodies.

Thanks for coming by.

Watermelon chunks barely frozen, through the food processor, add rum.
