csa share 09/22/11

by Stacy

We skipped a week of our CSA while I was in New York last week. The pickings were slim in the fridge when I got home and I was so excited to have fresh food again.

What better way to celebrate the last day of summer than with a last hurrah bounty of summer produce?

I did have a salad for lunch after I took these photos, but scrolling through them now makes me want to make a really awesome fajita burrito. Just me?

I went to pick up the box as soon as the farmer’s market opened, but you can see the light is already changing and turning golden earlier in the day. Now that’s it’s cooled off for the evening I want to roast everything, but when it was 82 degrees this afternoon, the salad sufficed.

How late in the season does your CSA run? Are you still getting the remnants of the summer harvest, or is it fall produce time?

You’re right; your CSA haul this week is crying out for Mexican food. But I only have eyes for those tiny round “zucchinis” – I want to grow those in my garden next year!

Eight-ball squash! The round yellow ones with green tips are Floridor — we have a volunteer growing in a pot outside that has one squash and some tempting squash blossoms.

How do the onion sprouts compare to, say, alfalfa sprouts?

Onion sprouts actually have a fairly potent onion flavor. They also grow a spicy radish sprout mix that’s quite zesty. I’ve been heaping them on salads for a flavorful crunch.

I read your blog time and again and was intrigued by these CSA shares. I’m excited to have just signed up for a local CSA in South Florida. It starts November 20 and runs for 20 weeks!
