csa share 10/14/10

We moved to a new neighborhood so our CSA pick up is now Thursdays at the local farmer’s market. The market is awesome and next time we go I will take photos. This week we had to pick up and run so I could get to work on time.

It’s also New Food Friday! I’m thinking of a new approach to New Food Friday, but I haven’t been home to really work on it. So I’ll cheat: Did you try a new food this week?

Mine might have to be the fancy Cheddar Cauliflower we got in the CSA but haven’t eaten yet. Check it out, and the other fun stuff we got.

I’m looking forward to trying the cauliflower and radicchio most of all.

What’s in your CSA? What are you favorite dishes to make with the above ingredients?

We grow fennel in the back yard, and I love to just munch on the flowers and seeds. It’s like licorice, without the sugar. Yum. Ours tends to not have substantial roots, so when we’ve tried to eat it like that it’s not very exciting.

Fennel pollen is a super fancy gourmet ingredient, you know!

I just roasted one of these bulbs with the eggplant and you can smell it outside our apartment. Whee!

It’s not that unusual, but we had okra for the first time here at CI last week. Being in the Pacific NW, it’s not a local food, and I’d always thought of it as gummy and yucky. But… we have a treasured Gumbo cookbook my husband brought me from a trip to New Orleans, and the recipe we had last week called for it. And wow! Were we surprised – we both love it! Hooray for open minds and willingness to try new things. (though this one wasn’t too much of a stretch!)

Agreed that it’s not an ingredient many people grow up with in the north! We just had it for the first time a few weeks ago (roasted) and liked it, too.
