csa share 4/6/10

by Stacy

I didn’t skip a week! Our CSA takes “spring break” off since so many people are out of town. Our latest share is full of tasty goodies and I have some fun ideas planned.

First things first:

Strawberries! According to several news articles the cold weather in Florida delayed their crops that are normally harvested in January and February. Instead, they’re ripe now at the same time as California’s early berry harvest. The result? A market full of really inexpensive strawberries. We ate these already and bought more at the grocery store for cheap. Yum. I used them in a tart which escaped photos, but I might make another one so I can post it.

Snow peas for stir fry. The first batch I blanched, drained, and sauteed with butter and mint until crisp-tender.

Broccoli, already cut into florets. Just rinse and cook.

Fractal alien veggies! Romanesco cauliflower looks dramatic, doesn’t it?

Greens this week are leaf lettuce and Napa cabbage, green cabbage, and braise mix (not pictured).

I’ve never been a carrot fan, but the multi-colored bunches are so pretty that I have been cooking with them more. They’re good for me, I know.

It’s been nice to get fresh herbs in our boxes to really up the flavor when cooking, and this week’s herb was fresh mint. Another member was picking up her share at the same time as me and even gave me her bunch since they have a flourishing mint plant at home. Thanks!

Fun fact: mint plants have square stems.

A fun item they included was this small container of “micro basil.” I’ve only used it as garnish so far but think it would be amazing in salad, on pasta, or in a sandwich.

The first share of the month also includes a shareholder newsletter with information and recipes. Now that spring has sprung, it also includes “new plantings” so we know what we can look forward to in the coming months. April plantings include okra, eggplant, melons, peppers, and summer squash. Yum.

Every single one of your CSA posts makes me yearn. Stupid tiny isolated desert town…

Also, hehe, fractal veggies.

Soon! Just think of your seeds!

They’re totally fractals. Sadly I don’t think that’s improving the chances of my husband eating them.

Ok, I could not be more jealous that you have that kind of produce this at this time of year. That looks like ours will be in mid-summer up in Seattle.

To be honest, we’re just getting used to it. And now we are spoiled.
